Stop Learning Blindly: The Fastest Way to Grow Is to Start With a Problem

Why reading more doesn't always make you grow faster—and how real-world problems can show you what to learn next.

We often think of learning as accumulation.

Read more books. Take more courses. Listen to more podcasts. Save more articles. Follow successful people. Build a longer reading list.

And then tell ourselves:

I’m constantly growing.

But as information becomes increasingly abundant, I’ve started to think that knowledge itself is no longer the scarce resource.

The harder part is knowing why you need to learn something—and what you actually need to learn.

You can read hundreds of books and still have no idea what problem you are trying to solve.

Or you can read one book at exactly the right moment, find one idea that answers a question you’ve been struggling with, and change an important decision because of it.

That is why I no longer believe that reading more automatically means growing faster.

The most effective learning often doesn’t begin with a book.

It begins with a problem.


A Question Can Change the Way You Read

I recently experienced this through investing.

I had a very specific question:

How should I evaluate the fundamentals and valuation of a company?

Once that question was in my mind, I started listening to investment podcasts differently.

At one point, I heard some discussion about Peter Lynch’s approach to investing.

Previously, I might have simply thought:

“That’s an interesting idea.”

This time, I immediately wanted to know more.

How did Peter Lynch actually evaluate companies?

What did he say in his own books?

Which parts of his approach could help me answer the question I was already thinking about?

So I went looking for his books.

That experience reminded me of something important:

I wasn’t reading Peter Lynch because his book appeared on an investment reading list. I was reading him because I had a question.

That makes a huge difference.

The same thing happened when I encountered ideas from Charlie Munger.

Instead of simply collecting another famous name and another recommended book, I wanted to understand the thinking behind the ideas that had caught my attention.

The learning became much more active.

I wasn’t trying to finish a book.

I was trying to solve a problem.

After several years of experiencing ups and downs in the market, I finally understood Charlie Munger.


Learning Without a Problem Can Become a Form of Productive-Looking Procrastination

There is something strangely satisfying about learning.

  • Finishing a book feels like progress.
  • Completing a course feels like progress.
  • Saving 50 useful articles feels like progress.
  • Listening to three hours of podcasts feels like progress.

And sometimes it is.

But there is an important question:

What changed afterward?

  • Did you solve a problem?
  • Did you make a better decision?
  • Did you change the way you work?
  • Did you create something?
  • Did you receive feedback from reality?

If nothing changed, the knowledge may still be sitting at the information level.

That doesn’t mean learning is useless.

It means that learning itself is not the same thing as growth.

Growth happens when knowledge changes what you can actually do.


Real-World Problems Become Your Curriculum

Nawar said: The fastest way to grow is to focus on making money, rather than persisting in studying.

Making money is the process of creating value in the real world, and it has a powerful characteristic:

It gives you feedback.

Suppose you want to make money from short-form video content, but nobody watches your videos.

You now have a problem.

You may need to understand topics, storytelling, editing, distribution, algorithms, or audience psychology.

Or suppose you start an online store, but your products don’t sell.

You may have to learn about customer demand, pricing, traffic, conversion, product selection, and supply chains.

The learning becomes different because you are no longer learning simply to know something.

You are learning because reality has presented you with a problem.

This is why I think reality can be one of the best teachers.

Reality creates the curriculum.


My Own Website Taught Me This Better Than Any Course Could

I experienced this myself while building my own website.

When I first started, I thought the process was relatively simple:

  • Write good articles.
  • Publish consistently.
  • Gradually build an audience.

But eventually, reality gave me a very specific problem:

Google wasn’t indexing my content the way I expected.

I started looking into SEO, site structure, search intent, content organization, internal linking, indexing, and how individual articles fit into a larger content system.

And I gradually realized that writing an article is only the most visible part of running a content website.

Other questions matter too:

  • Why does someone search for this topic?
  • Why would a search engine consider one page more useful than another?
  • How should related articles connect?
  • What should the overall structure of a website look like?
  • How can individual pieces of content become something more durable than isolated posts?

Nobody sat down and gave me a complete curriculum.

The problem created the curriculum.

And every time I solved one problem, I discovered another.

Looking back, I don’t think the articles that failed to get indexed were wasted effort.

They gave me feedback.

And the feedback showed me what I needed to learn next.


This Is Where Naval’s Idea About Wealth Becomes Interesting

This is also where some of Naval Ravikant’s ideas became more interesting to me.

One of his recurring themes is that creating wealth is not simply about working harder or accumulating more information.

It involves developing valuable knowledge, creating products or services, and using leverage to make that value scalable.

What I find useful about this idea is not simply the advice to “make money.”

It is the idea that wealth creation can itself become a field of study.

Instead of endlessly studying everything, you begin asking:

  • What can I create?
  • Who needs it?
  • What problem does it solve?
  • Why would someone pay for it?
  • How can I make the process more efficient?
  • How can technology, media, capital, or systems help me create more value without simply exchanging more hours for money?

Those questions naturally lead to learning.

And the learning is connected to reality.

That is very different from collecting knowledge for its own sake.


AI Can Help You Find the Map, But It Can’t Think for You

There is another major change in how we learn today: AI.

When information is abundant, we simply cannot read every book from beginning to end.

AI can become a very useful reading navigator.

For example, when I pick up a book, I can ask:

  • What is the central argument?
  • Which ideas are most relevant to the problem I’m trying to solve?
  • Which chapters deserve deeper attention?
  • If I only have an hour, where should I start?

I can even describe my specific problem and ask whether the book is likely to help.

This doesn’t mean AI should replace reading or thinking.

It means AI can reduce the time spent searching for the right information.

It can help us:

  • filter information,
  • compare different ideas,
  • build a mental map,
  • identify relevant chapters,
  • and discover better questions.

But eventually, we still have to read, understand, question, and judge for ourselves.

AI can reduce the cost of finding answers. It cannot remove the need to form your own judgment.


The More You Learn, the More Selective You Should Become

Perhaps the biggest change in my own approach to learning is not that I know more.

It is that I am becoming more selective about what deserves my attention.

When I encounter a new subject now, I try not to immediately think:

“This is important. I should learn it.”

Instead, I ask:

How is this connected to the problem I am trying to solve?

If there is no connection, I can leave it for later.

If there is a connection, I can go deeper.

This is also a form of judgment.

Our time, attention, and energy are limited.

We cannot learn everything.

Perhaps mature learning is not about building an ever-larger collection of knowledge.

It is about becoming better at deciding:

  • What deserves deep study?
  • What only requires a basic understanding?
  • What can wait?
  • And what is simply not worth my attention right now?

The Goal of Learning Is to Become More Capable in the Real World

The real purpose of learning, at least as I see it now, is not to become someone who knows a lot.

It is to become someone who can face reality with greater clarity.

  • To see problems more clearly.
  • To make better-informed judgments.
  • To solve problems more effectively.
  • To adapt when your assumptions turn out to be wrong.

Once the problem becomes clear, many things become easier to identify.

  • Which book to read.
  • Which person to learn from.
  • Which skill to develop.
  • Which information to ignore.
  • And sometimes, what you should stop learning altogether.

In the past, books found readers. Now, problems can find books.

The most effective learning is not about knowing more and more.

It is about becoming increasingly clear about:

what is worth learning, why it matters, and how you are going to use it.

Because learning becomes truly valuable when it stops being an activity you collect—and becomes part of how you solve problems, create value, and grow.
