How to reignite oneself when inertia strikes- lifestyle of the 103-year-old Nobel laureate

How to reignite oneself when inertia strikes- lifestyle of the 103-year-old Nobel laureate

Throughout one's life, what often brings us down is not failure nor a lack of ability.
Rather, it is inertia.

It doesn't strike you with a loud bang, but sneaks up on you quietly:

  • After a few days of studying, you start thinking of stopping
  • After a while of exercising, you feel it's okay to be lazy today
  • When working encounters resistance, you start doubting the meaning of persistence
  • When feeling down, you don't want to do anything

Many people don't lose to difficulties, but lose to this gradual process of letting themselves slack off.

Recently, I read the story of Rita Levi-Montalcini and was deeply touched.

She won the Nobel Prize for discovering nerve growth factor (NGF) and kept working until she was 103 years old, maintaining a sharp mind and vigorous vitality.

At that moment, I realized:

Sometimes, the truly lived life of an outstanding person is more powerful than a hundred motivational slogans.

kept working until she was 103 years old,

1 ,Why do people always fall into inertia?

Because it is an inherent human tendency to seek comfort and avoid stress.

The brain naturally prefers:

  • Immediate gratification
  • Familiar paths
  • Less energy consumption
  • Avoiding uncertainty

So when you want to read, you will want to use your phone.
When you want to exercise, you will think about starting tomorrow.
When you want to break through, you will choose to lie down and give up first.

This is not because you have weak willpower, but it is the default setting of human nature.

The truly outstanding people are not those without inertia. Instead, they know how to pull themselves back every time.

2 ,The lifestyle of a 103-year-old person made me reflect.

2.1、 While most people relax, she continues to work.

Many people consider retirement as the end and age as an excuse.
But she remained engaged in research, thinking, and writing until her later years.
This made me understand:

  • People do not stop growing because they get older.
  • People get older often because they stop growing first.

Continuously devoting oneself to a beloved cause is itself the strongest resistance to decline, and it has nothing to do with age.

2.2、 Regular early waking: Allocate the most alert time to high-value tasks

Rita has long maintained the habit of getting up early, not for the purpose of mere self-discipline by checking off tasks, but to handle complex work when her mind is at its clearest.

Studies have shown that after waking up at a fixed time, the human body enters a more alert state, and one's concentration and execution ability tend to be stronger.

Why is productivity higher in the morning?

  • Less brain interference, better concentration
  • More adequate mental recovery, higher quality of decision-making
  • More suitable for deep thinking, writing, and learning

The key point is not to wake up early, but to maintain a regular schedule and utilize your prime time for important tasks.

2.3、 Dietary restraint: Reducing burden and making the brain more alert

She only has lunch once a day.

Occasionally, she will have a small bowl of soup or eat an orange in the evening.

This is not for losing weight, but to keep her mind clear. She has found that a light diet helps her think more quickly and concentrate better.

Modern research has found that moderate control of calorie intake and avoiding long-term overeating are beneficial for both physical health and cognitive function.

A light diet has been increasingly recognized and accepted by more and more people. Avoiding excessive eating and preventing obesity not only changes the appearance of the body, but more importantly, keeps the brain in a state of alertness.

2.4、 When most people give up, she keeps learning.

At the age of 103, she still maintains her thinking ability. This is not a miracle but the result of long-term training.

Learning is not for exams or to show off. The essence of learning is:

To keep the brain sharp and to continuously upgrade cognition.

Many people stop learning after the age of 30, yet they complain that their lives have stagnated. Those who stop inputting will eventually stop growing.

2.5、 While most people were complaining, she maintained a positive attitude.

Life is never easy, but your mindset determines how you face reality.

  • Negative emotions drain your motivation.
  • A positive mindset keeps you moving forward.

It's not because everything goes smoothly that you are optimistic.Rather, it is because you remain optimistic that you have more strength to overcome difficulties.

"Thanks to the accumulation of rich experience, my thinking ability is much stronger now than when I was 20," she said at the age of 103.

She maintained a sharp mind until the very end of her life, proving that aging does not necessarily mean a decline in intelligence.

Our brains do not deteriorate with age. As long as you develop good habits, you can remain mentally agile in your old age.

3 ,The growth of adults is not about always being strong.

It's about repeatedly losing connection and then restarting.

Those who are truly consistently excellent will also feel tired, be lazy, and doubt themselves. The difference is:

  • Ordinary people lie down for a long time after losing connection.
  • Excellent people, after losing connection, quickly return.

So don't pursue being perpetually high-energy. That's not realistic.

What you should pursue is:
After every deviation, be able to quickly return to the track.

4 ,Learn to reignite yourself

What you need is a reminder, an example, a moment that makes you stand up again.

  • It could be a book.
  • It could be a sentence.
  • It could be seeing a 103-year-old still living a serious life.

These moments will pull you out of the deviated state and bring you back into your healthy habit state.

  • Read 10 pages of a book
  • Exercise for 30 minutes
  • Write down your weekly goals
  • Deal with the task that has been delayed the longest
  • Go to bed half an hour earlier

5 ,Final Thoughts

Each of us is prone to being held back by inertia.

When people are tired, confused, or have low energy, their cognitive resources decline, leading to the following phenomena:

Not wanting to think, being prone to procrastination, watching short videos to escape, doubting themselves, and giving up long-term goals.

Consciously placing a favorite book, a beloved idol, or a powerful quote nearby will give you strength during your low moments, correct your direction from time to time, and constantly remind you.

Because people are not always strong, but the environment can help you regain your strength.

---Extended Reading and Resources---

Charlie Munger said:

The essence of reading is to acquire the experiences of others at a low cost.

By reading their books, I can gain their lifetime wisdom. They all summed up their wisdom through a lifetime of experiencing setbacks and failures. You can easily obtain this through reading.

If you don't read, you can only rely on your own body to bump into walls, bleed, and accumulate that little bit of pitiful experience. This is too slow and too painful.

Today, I finally understood what Munger said.
