1. What is collagen?
Collagen is an abundant protein in the human body, and the skin, the largest organ in the human body, is made up of 75% collagen. With an average body weight of 53kg, the body contains about 3kg of collagen, which is equivalent to the weight of six 500ml bottles of water. Collagen is not only an important building block of hair, skin and nails, but also the building block of teeth, blood vessels and cartilage. It is the main connective tissue that holds the body's parts together. Collagen and elastin work together to support the skin; Collagen strengthens the skin's toughness and makes it firmer, while elastin gives it more elasticity. As we age, the body's production of collagen slows down, and organs such as skin, eyes, teeth, cartilage, hair, and nails can't get enough strength and support, and begin to deteriorate gradually. That's when we notice the signs of aging in our bodies. Skin exposure to harsh environments and environmental pollutants can cause collagen degradation and trigger oxidative stress in the skin, thus accelerating skin aging.
