Health is the foundation of everything: A long-termist approach to diet, exercise, and emotional management in life

1、All long-term success is predicated on good health.

  • A 88-year-old Japanese trader, after 50 failures, remained undaunted and eventually made millions in the stock market.
  • Warren Buffett, at 94, is only now seriously considering retirement, and he admits that the vast majority of his wealth was accumulated after the age of 50.
  • Charlie Munger thought until his last moment and lived to be 99.

These stories repeatedly confirm a fact that we often overlook but is undeniably true: No matter what industry you are in or what goals you pursue, the prerequisite is that you must have a good body.

Life is only once. Living well and healthily is the foundation of everything. Wealth, achievements, and fame only have true meaning when built on a healthy body. Otherwise, they are all just empty talk.

Living well and healthily is the foundation of everything.

2、Health is never taken for granted but a life principle that must be adhered to.

Only those who have truly lain in a hospital bed can understand how precious a healthy body is.

As we grow older, the greatest realization is often not "how to succeed", but rather that we cannot determine whether we will live to a ripe old age, but we can decide whether to treat our bodies well.

The body is the origin of all things. Without health, there is no capital for continuous efforts, nor the ability to enjoy life. Truly mature people always put health at the top of their life priorities.

So, how exactly should we cherish our bodies? I prefer to discuss it from three most fundamental yet often overlooked aspects: diet, exercise, and mindset.

3、Before passion and persistence, respect the boundaries of your body first.

I once heard the host Lu Yu mention that the thing she most wants to do in her life is to keep pursuing her career as long as possible, because it is what she truly loves.

But she immediately added a sentence - "Of course, as long as my body allows it."
This sentence deeply touched me.

It turns out that the truly mature "fighting until the end" is not about consuming oneself at any cost, but about going as far as possible under the premise of respecting the boundaries of your body.

The body may not be entirely under our control, but what we can do is to try our best to protect it. Because only when the body is still intact, is it possible for passion to continue.

4、Diet: For long-termists, one must eat in a restrained and mindful manner.

Looking at the world at large, the truly beneficial dietary patterns for long-term health all share one common feature: they are light, restrained, and sustainable.

  • Mediterranean diet
  • Japanese light diet
  • Whole-food diet based on natural ingredients

Without exception, all of these remind us:

  • Eat more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains
  • Prioritize high-quality proteins (fish, beans)
  • Reduce oil, salt, and processed foods
  • Control alcohol intake

I myself have a deep understanding of this.

For a long time, the Chinese cooking style was heavy in oil and salty. Even with moderate consumption, it was difficult to lose weight, while the burden on the body was accumulating quietly.

Later, I began to consciously adjust my dietary structure:

  • Reduce the use of oil
  • More steaming, boiling, and stewing
  • Replace some red meat with fish
  • Pay attention to the natural flavor of the ingredients

These seemingly minor changes, over time, have a very real and positive impact on the body.

5、Exercise: The truly effective one is the kind you can stick to for a lifetime.

If you spend long hours sitting at your desk and stare at the computer screen for more than 8 hours every day, your body is surely paying a price.

Not only will you have problems with your back and shoulders, but your eyes will also give you warnings.

I myself was diagnosed with dry eye syndrome, and a large part of the reason was due to long hours of desk work and staring at the screen for a long time.

So, getting your body moving is not a choice but a must-do.

Exercise doesn't have to be complicated, and it doesn't necessarily have to be "high-intensity". What's truly important is:

Choose an exercise that you can stick to for a long time.

  • Running
  • Yoga
  • Stretching
  • Brisk walking

The simpler it is, the easier it is to stick to.

I have been running for over 7 years now, and the most obvious change is:
Since then, I haven't caught a cold once.

What exercise brings is not only an improvement in physical fitness, but also a stable, controllable, and upward-moving lifestyle rhythm.

6、Emotional stability is the most fundamental self-discipline ability of adults.

Often, what truly breaks us down is not the hardship of life itself, but the loss of control over our emotions.

When you are in a low mood, even trivial matters can become an unbearable burden;
But when your inner state is stable, even in the midst of storms, you can still cope.

Emotional stability does not mean suppressing emotions; rather, it means allowing emotions to exist without being dominated by them.

  • When you want to cry, cry freely
  • When you are happy, don't deliberately restrain yourself
  • Don't punish yourself with others' expectations

Learning to listen to your own heart and accept your true feelings is the first step towards maturity.
You are not a superman.
You don't have to be perfect in everything, nor can you satisfy everyone.

Please learn to:

  • Say no to meaningless consumption
  • Stay away from people and environments that make you uncomfortable for a long time
  • Stop pleasing others and start respecting yourself

7、Anger is the greatest enemy of the body.

Life is often not as we wish. This is true for the vast majority of cases.

However, long-term anger, anxiety, and repression are the real culprits that deplete the body.

When you feel agitated or lose control of your emotions, try some "noise reduction" methods for yourself:

  • Read a good book
  • Meditate for a few minutes
  • Practice calligraphy or writing
  • Do yoga or stretching
  • Listen to music to slow down the rhythm

These seemingly insignificant habits often represent your hidden power to combat internal stress and restore your physical and mental health.

8、Conclusion: Treat health as the most important investment in your life

Life is already busy enough. Please don't forget to reserve some relaxing and quiet time for yourself.

Starting from the three most fundamental dimensions - diet, exercise, and mindset - each of us can face life more positively:

  • What can be done, do it to the best of your ability
  • What cannot be controlled, let it be

Don't be discouraged, don't waste energy on internal conflicts, be self-disciplined but not harsh.

Taking good care of your body is the most responsible choice for yourself and for life.

May we all be able to accumulate gradually and move forward over the long term, and live out our own wonderful lives.
